"Zero's confession seemed to bring him some relief. The muscles in his face relaxed. As he drifted into sleep, Stanley soflty sang him the song that had been in his family for generations. "If only, if only...." "(pp. 175-176)

What significance does it have to the story as a whole that Stanley sings to Zero after having climbed to the top of the mountain?

By singing this particular song to Zero, the decendent of Madam Zeroni, Stanley fulfills his great-great-grandfather's promise and the bad luck curse on his family is lifted.

In Chapter 42, Zero suggests that Big Thumb must have water in it, because 'water doesn't run uphill'. What is the significance of this statement?

In the beginning of the story, we were told that Sam had an onion field on the other side of the lake where water runs uphill. Something supernatural/magical is at stake here in the story - things are connected - but Zero speaks like a true realist.

The removal of the layers of the onion one at a time is a metaphor showing us how Stanley 'layer' by 'layer' (bit by bit) understands how things are connected and the story behind the shoes falling from the sky (his own fate).
