Jesus shares his ministry in a special way with the Apostles

To repent & become his disciples
Everywhere the Apostles went
they gathered believers into local communities
Bishops, priests & deacons have different roles & responsibilities in the Church. Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders
they are given the grace to serve God's people, preach the Good News, & lead the Church
The Sacrament of Holy Orders
is a wonderful celebration for the Church. The whole Church community in the diocese gathers together for the celebration
Andrew was born in Korea in 1826 at that time,
was illegal to be a Christian in Korea. Christians were tortured & killed for their faith
After a night of prayer, Jesus
Called his disciples to himself, & from them he chose twelve, whom he also named Apostles
Some of these leaders acted
on behalf of the Apostles
Bishops are
the successors of the Apostles & are responsible for the care of the whole Church. They are called to continue the Apostle's mission of leadership & service
The celebration of Holy Orders always takes place
during the celebration of the Mass. The ordination of deacons, priests, & bishops is similar
Despite the threat
Andrew's parents converted to Christianity
Whoever receives the one I send
receives me
From generations to the next, The Holy Spirit guided bishops & the Pope, the bishop of Rome
to share Jesus' authority with others
A Bishop usually leads & cares for
a diocese, a local community of Christian faithful. A diocese is made up of parish communities & can include schools, colleges, & even hospitals
In all three cases, the Liturgy of the word includes
readings about ministry & service. After the Gospel reading, those to be ordained are presented to the bishop celebrant
Andrew was baptized at
age 15 & traveled more than 1000 miles to attend seminary in China
Before he returned to his Father, Jesus
promised his Apostles that they would receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit
The Sacrament of Holy Orders
is the Sacrament in which Baptized men are ordained to serve the Church as Bishops, priests, & deacons
Priests are ordained by
a Bishop & are called to serve the Christian faithful by leading, teaching, & most especially celebrating the Eucharist & other sacraments
During the laying on of hands
The bishop celebrant prays in silence. He then prays aloud the prayer of consecration
Six years later, he was ordained & became the
first Korean-born priest. He returned to Korea to evangelize & bring the sacraments to Christian converts in his native county
After his Death & Resurrection, the Risen Christ gave the Apostles the authority to continue his work. He commissioned, or sent, them saying
Peace be with you. As the father has sent me, so I send you & when said this, he breathed on them & said to them, receive the Holy Spirit
In the Sacrament of Holy Orders
-Men are ordained by the bishop's laying on of hands & prayer of consecration
-Those ordained receive the grace necessary to carry out their ministry to the faithful
-The Church, through her ordained ministers, continue the mission that Jesus Christ first gave to his Apostles
Deacons are
Baptized men who are ordained to the work service for the Church. They may serve their parish communities in worship, leadership, & social ministries
The words of the prayer of consecration are different for deacons, priests & bishops. Through this prayer these men are consecrated, dedicated for a particular service in the Church. The bishop celebrant
extends his hands, & by the power of the Holy Spirit consecrates the candidates or the bishop-elect to continue Jesus' ministry. The newly ordained are forever marked by Holy Orders
In June 1826, while arranging to bring Christian missionaries into the country
