She feels embarrassed about her name. She got her name from her great-grandmother who was also named Esperanza. But her great-grandmother lost all of her hope, and spent her days at a window waiting for life to start. Esperanza doesn't want to lose what her name means, and she feels herself losing hope. (Ironic, right?)
