Vocabulary
100

Scientists try to explain our "beginnings"

What is origins?

100

Information that can be observed and recorded

Observable data

100

The study of the evolutionary relationships among organisms

What is phylogenetics?

100

Idea that life came from nonliving things

What is abiogenesis?

200

The idea that life began somewhere else.

What is exogenesis?

200

Species on earth have never changes once they appeared

What is fixity of species
200

Scientists select the simplest phylogenetic tree that requires the fewest evolutionary changes

parsimony

200

Our current classification system

What is systematics?

DAILY DOUBLE

Redi's experiment with the three jars and meat help disprove this idea of life coming from nothing.

Spontaneous Generation

300

Some body parts appear to have no function

What is Vestigial structures?

300

A diagram that evolutionary scientists use to show the relationship between organisms and that evolution happened.

What is phylogenetic trees?

300

Certain individuals within a species are better suited for surviving in their environment

What is adaptation?

400

Experiment that attempted to create organic materials, such as amino acids, from gases and electrical charges

What is the Miller-Urey Experiment?

400

Daily DOUBLE

Ideas are based on assumptions accepted as true

Theories of origin of life

400

This theory supports the idea that phylogenetics says species with similar genes are closely related supports which theory

Evolution/evolutionary scientists

DAILY DOUBLE

Similar in structure but different in function

What is homologous?

500

What are some of the issues with Miller-Urey Experiment?

Many of the molecules produced were not useful for creating life and were sometimes even destructive.

Some processes responsible for generating amino acids and molecules could break them down even faster.

Opinions about what Earth's atmosphere was actually like continue to change.

Amino acids are mirror images of each other. In living things they are all left handed. In the experiment they were left and right handed.

A whale flipper and a dog's leg are similar in structure, but the whale's flipper is used for swimming and dog's leg for running and swimming.

What is Homologous structure?

500

From a creationists perspective, what is the purpose of the phylogenetic tree? How is this different from an evolutionary perspective?

The Creationist perspective is that the tree is used to show which organisms are more similar. It shows which traits are shared by multiple organisms. Form an evolutionary perspective, the tree infers that shared traits result from a common ancestor.

500

Structures that are similar in construction but have different functions compared to Different structures that have the same function

What is homologous structures vs analogous structures?
