- To describe recently completed actions (to emphasise something that has just happened.) Example: "I have just finished my homework."

1. Actions continuing from the past to the present (actions that began in the past and are still happening). Example: "I have been studying English for three hours." (The action is ongoing.)

2. Recently completed actions with present effects (actions that have just stopped but have a visible or tangible effect in the present). Example: "She has been running, and now she’s out of breath." (The effect of running is noticeable.)

3. Emphasising the duration of an action (how long an action has been happening), often with since or for. Example: "They have been working on this project since Monday." (The focus is on the duration of the work.)

  • Indicating the duration of an action:

    • Temporal markers like for and since are used to express how long an action has been happening (in Present Perfect Continuous) or how long something has been true (in Present Perfect Simple).
    • Examples:

      • "I have lived here since 2010." (Simple – duration of a state)
  • Showing the timing or relevance of actions

    • Markers like just, already, and yet (in Present Perfect Simple) and lately, recently (in Present Perfect Continuous) emphasise when an action occurred or highlight its present relevance.
    • Examples:
      • "I have just finished my homework." (Simple – action recently completed)
      • "They have been exercising a lot recently." (Continuous – action with recent relevance)
