The Compromise of 1850 was a law passed to appease tensions between the North and the South. Texas received $10 million to give up the western part of its territory to New Mexico. The Compromise also permitted California to become a part of the United States as a free state. All other acquired new land would be able to choose whether they wanted to be a free state or slave state.
