Lent is a time for prayer, penance, good-will, fasting and drawing closer to God. Holy Week is a period of intensified prayer, penance and fasting leading to Pascha (Easter).

The church clergies would walk around the bonfire and pray; the high priest would light it. The choir sang gospel songs, and others sang songs that praised God. Then, the high priest concluded the celebration with a final prayer. Traditionally, people would leave the church celebration and have a second bonfire in their homes. Then the holiday is followed by the traditional feast because it's a celebration of the founding of the true cross.

Why do ethiopian fast (filseta) the 16th day fasting?

The feast of the Ascension of the Holy Virgin Mariam to heaven. This is the most highly honored feast among all the feasts of the saints. It is observed on August 22. The Lord did not permit the body in which He Himself had dwelt to be corrupted. Hence, though the Holy Virgin Mariam, as a human being, underwent death, She was raised from death and taken into heaven. As Christians we are assured of our resurrection first and foremost by the resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Eyesus Kristos and then by the resurrection of Our Holy Mother, the Virgin Mariam.

What is the true meaning of Ester (Tensae)?

The true meaning of Easter is about the love Jesus has for us and the purpose and peace he gives us.

In the Bible, Jesus said of himself, “I am the path, the truth, and the energy of life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, The Voice). Jesus died and rose back to life so everyone can have a meaningful relationship with God the Father – the Creator of the Universe. Sin broke that relationship, but Jesus repaired it. Because of Jesus’ victory over death by coming back to life, we too can experience a new, everlasting life in Heaven with God.

But not only does Jesus offer us a promise for the future, he also offers everyone hope and joy for today. When the world causes us stress about the cost of living and health concerns, anxiety over safety, heartache, dissatisfaction, fear and many other crises or negative feelings, Jesus offers us something greater and deeper. He offers us a promise of peace.

Jesus says, “I am leaving you with a gift — peace of mind and heart! And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27, TLB).
