100

What disease does the patient already have?

Sickle Cell Disease, or Sickle Cell Anemia

100

How many chambers does a heart have?

4

100

What are some joints in your body? Name 3.

Hip, knee, elbow, shoulder, wrist, etc.

100

What is a neuron?

A nerve cell.

100
Name 4 different systems in your body.

Skeletal system, circulatory system, nervous system, etc.

200

What is the general shape of a blood cell that is infected with sickle cell anemia?

A moon or crescent shape.

200

When/why would a doctor do a biopsy?

To check for a disease.

200

Why would a doctor choose to suture?

Sutures, or stitches, are used to help treat a cut or wound. Depending on the depth, size, and location of the cut a doctor might choose to also use bandages, staples, or adhesives

200

What does a neuron do?

Neurons are the cells in the brain and body that send messages.

200

What is the purpose of myelin sheath in a neuron?

Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord. It allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells. If myelin is damaged, these impulses slow down.

300

Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Which one has the largest majority in blood? (there is the most of it)

Plasma makes up about 55% of the blood, and the rest is a mixture of red blood cells (40%), white blood cells (1%), and platelets (4%)

300

What is osteoporosis?

A condition where bones become fragile because of tissue loss

300
At what point of the engineering design process do you get feedback?

At any point.

300

What is the nervous system?

The brain, nerves, the spinal cord. The nervous system is responsible for the body feeling pain and other senses and communication between body parts.

300

Name one of the purposes of blood.

To transport oxygen, to regulate the body (temperature, PH, etc), to protect the body (blood clots, white blood cells, etc.)

400

What is the circulatory system?

The body system responsible for the flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other substances throughout the body

400

What is the difference between arteries and veins?

Arteries carry blood away from the heart, and veins carry blood towards the heart.

400

What is the difference between criteria and constraint? (think of engineers)

Criteria is the standards that need to be met by an engineering design. Constraints are limitations that must be satisfied by a design.

400

Which receives signals in a neuron: axons or dendrites?

Dendrites receive messages. Axons send messages from the cell body to other neurons.

400

What do stem cells do?

Stem cells have the potential to become different cell types. When a stem cell divides it can replace old or damaged cells, or can become a cell with a specialized function (such as a red blood cell, muscle cell, etc.).

500

What is the difference between a system and subsystem?

A system is a set of parts that interact to achieve a goal or perform a function. A subsystem is a smaller system with its own function inside the larger system.

500

What does DNA stand for?

Deoxyribonucleic acid

500

What is the purpose of the engineering design process?

To design technologies to solve a problem.

500

Where in Phineas Gage's brain did the metal spike enter?

The left frontal lobe.

500

What is the name of the artery in the heart that supplies the heart muscle with blood?

The coronary artery.
