Shackleton made a plan. He and five men would set off in one of their lifeboats. They would guide it across the roughest seas in the world. After 800 miles (1,300 km), they would reach South Georgia Island. There, they would find help at a whaling station. They would get a ship to come back to Elephant Island to rescue the men waiting there. What a wild plan! So many things could go wrong. And once the little lifeboat set out, many things did go wrong.
