600

shoulder

That portion of the highway adjacent to the roadway for accommodating stopped vehicles or for emergency use.

700

Vehicle entering stop or yield intersection

This is one of the most important definitions in this module and is often the basis for the "at fault" determination in many collisions. § First, a driver must stop at one of three locations at a stop sign-controlled intersection: before the stop line if there is one, before the nearest crosswalk marking, or at the point nearest to the intersection with an optimal view of the intersecting street. These may not apply if an officer or traffic control signal is directing the driver to proceed. § Second, the stopped vehicle must yield the right of way to a vehicle in the intersection or one that is about to enter the intersection (typically after having stopped). In either event, the stopped vehicle must not proceed until it is safe to do so. § Third, the same requirement exists when a yield sign is present. The main difference is the driver is not required to stop unless safety requires a stop.

700

Suspension of Driver's License

The temporary withdrawal by formal action of the Secretary of a person's license or privilege to operate a motor vehicle on the public highways, for a period specifically designated by the Secretary. • Important Points: o This is a temporary withdrawal of a person's privilege to drive by the Secretary of State, meaning it is not permanent and the privilege is generally reinstated after a specified amount of time. • Example: A John Doe may have his license suspended for 60 days. 800

Stop sign

When required, means complete cessation from movement. • Important Points: This means the "cessation" of all movement. While this seems simple, it is often the foundation for failing to stop at a stop sign/light. “Stepping on the brakes” does not equate to “stopping.” • Example: If a vehicle makes a "rolling stop" at a stop sign, but does not cease all forward movement, the vehicle did not stop

900

Street

The entire width between boundary lines of every way publicly maintained, when any part thereof is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel. • Important Points: o This is similar to a roadway and INCLUDES the area between the boundary lines of a road. • Example: Consider a residential side street; the “street” runs from curb to curb
