Why might a team foul on purpose at the end of the game?

To stop the clock in a close game. 

Example: Team A is down 3 points with 20 seconds left. Team B has the ball, and Team A wants to foul Team B. Team A wants to stop the clock and hopes Team B misses. This will give Team A back the ball with a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer.
