How can you tell if someone is NOT interested in what you are saying?
They are looking away from you, not asking questions or trying to change the subject, moving their body away from you
What is a social filter?
Thinking about what we say before we say it.
You are trying to listen to the teacher, but someone else is talking too loudly. What can you do or say?
Ask them to stop using words and tone they will want to listen to (once), ask for a break, talk to staff, ignore them and try to stay focused
Why are non-verbal language cues important?
They help us read people's moods.
What does it mean to show empathy?
To acknowledge someone's feelings and take action to show you care (e.g. listening, solving a problem, kind words)
Elaina keeps trying to answer a math problem, but can't figure out the right answer. How might she feel? What can you say to her?
She might feel frustrated. You can say "nice try" or ask if she wants help.
What are ways to keep a conversation going?
Ask on topic questions, make related comments, nod to show you are listening

Our words, actions, and appearance.
If we think someone has a bad impression of us, how can we change to make it positive?
Adjust our behavior - show they we are listening to their words and respecting their boundaries. Use neutral or kind communication or give them space.
