What is the difference between calming your body and calming your thoughts?

Calming your body means helping your body feel safe and relaxed.

  • Your heart slows down

  • Your muscles relax

  • You stop yelling, moving too fast, or tensing up
    Examples: deep breathing, stretching, squeezing a stress ball, taking a break

Calming your thoughts means helping your brain think more helpful thoughts.

  • Your mind stops racing

  • You stop thinking “this is the worst”

  • You can think about choices and solutions
    Examples: telling yourself “I can handle this,” positive self-talk, problem-solving
