On this date in May, individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees.
What is Arbor Day?
A ten day celebration in Calgary that includes a rodeo, rides, and an exhibition. Girl Guides are often present at the parade and at various events throughout this celebration.
What is the Calgary Stampede?
This date, recognized the second Sunday after Labour Day, commemorates the efforts put forward by an eighteen year old Canadian cancer activist in the 1980s.
What is Terry Fox Day?
In 270 CE, the feast day for this saint was placed during the Roman fertility celebration Lupercalia, held in February, in an effort to Christianize the traditional rites.

Historically, advancement happens at this time of year. This could be a themed party of the unit's choice, take place at camp, be a special field trip, or another activity all together.

This date in April, established in 1970, celebrates efforts made towards the protection of the environment.
What is Earth Day? (April 22)
A day that seeks to educate Canadians on September 30 annually about the systemic injustices that Indigenous people experienced in residential schools and beyond.
What is The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation?
This date celebrates a priest who converted the Irish to Christianity. Many fables have spread about this priest since his death on March 17, 461 CE, including "driving the snakes out of Ireland" (converting pagans to Christianity)
What is St Patrick's Day?
Historically, unit enrolment takes place at this time of year. This could be a themed party, take place at camp, be a field trip, or something else of the unit's choosing.
What is fall?
This annual date, March 31, recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments and achievements of transgender and gender non conforming people world wide.
What is the International Trans Day of Visibility?
This festival takes place during the last week of August, with a parade occurring the Sunday of Labour Day weekend. The festival celebrates the inclusion of LGBTQ people in Calgary, and Girl Guides are included in the parade.
What is Calgary Pride?
A day declared by UNESCO on September 8 to promote the importance of a globally literate community. 16% of the world's population, 2/3 of which are women and girls, are unable to read/write in their own language.
What is International Literacy Day?
This date has been acknowledged as March 8 since 1913 and is used to celebrate and promote the rights and achievements of women. (There are activity packs available for download at the WAGGGS website!)

October 11 was declared by the UN General Assembly to be this day, to recognize the rights and issues that matter to this gender. (There is a special crest and activity pack commemorating this day annually through WAGGGS)
What is the International Day of The Girl?
A date declared by the UN, to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of girls and women in sciences, mathematics, engineering, and technology. It is acknowledged annually on February 11.
