Opportunities to buy cheap land believed skills would serve them well, hand no choice - it was a move for survival.

North: Relied on the industry and technology. Many new inventions allowed people to produce things efficiently. 

South: Slavery and cotton was their foundation. Slavery and cotton was their foundation (industry - was of little use and only a small market for manufactured goods)

Begin in Britain, in the textile industry (cloth-making). It carried over to the textile industry in New England area.

What do you know about Irish Immigrants?

Came because of the potato famine of 1845, 1 million people starved to death, 1 million left Ireland, most were farmers, work lowliest of jobs, young women were employed as household workers.

Skilled workers - kept plantations operating efficiently, worked in the owner's home - housekeepers, butlers, nannies, farm labor.

Slave owners wanted to keep slaves ignorant of the outside world to reduce the number of revolts and slaves that wanted to escape.

How did the industrial revolution impact communication?

North: Printing press invented = mass printing of newspapers and Telegraph invented = ran along railroads which allowed for quick communication.

South: Slavery and cotton was their foundation, due to a limited number of railways, fewer telegraph lines, and worse communication than the north.

Faced more discrimination than immigrants, Slavery ended in the early 1800's, Freedom did not grant them equal treatment (not granted the right to vote, no allowed to work in factories/skilled trades, employers preferred to hire immigrants over African Americans)

Examples of Slave Codes?

Denied the right to vote, the right to a trial by jury, could not testify against whites, children could not attend public schools, had to carry passes to prove they were free, could not gather without a white person, no groups of more than 3 slaves could gather and cannot own a gun.

What 4 key ingredients make up the Missouri Compromise?

1.Maine would be admitted to the Union as a free state

2.Missouri could be admitted to the Union as a slave state

3.The Louisiana Territory north of the southern border of Missouri would be free of slavery

4.It gave southern owners a right to pursue escaped fugitive slaves into "free" regions and return them to slavery

Schools, public facilities, African Americans formed their own churches, newspapers portrayed A.A. as inferior.
