Infectious Diseases
An unusually high occurrence of a disease in a certain place during a certain time.
What is an Epidemic?
Infectious diseases that have become increasingly common in humans within the last 20 years or threatens to become more common.
What are Emerging Diseases?
when an epidemic affects many areas of the world
What is a Pandemic?
Yeasts, molds, mushrooms.
Athlete's Foot (scaly rash causing itch or burns, often at the bottom of the foot)
Ringworm (highly contagious skin infection of body or scalp)
What are examples of Fungi?
Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, Protozoans
What are examples of Pathogens?
More complex than bacteria - can move through liquids.
What are Protozoans?
Found in air, food, soil, bodies of plants/animals.
What is Bacteria?
The body's general response to all kind of injury, causes a heat sensation in areas affected in the body.
What is the body's Inflammatory Response?
The body's most sophisticated line of defense for different types of pathogens.
What is the body's Immune System?
Not a living thing because it must inject itself into a host, take over the host's cell's reproductive mechanisms later resulting in cell damage or death.
What are Viruses?
Example: Common Cold, Chickenpox
caused by pathogenic microorganisms or viruses that enter and multiply in the body
What are Infectious Diseases?
They protect your body from infection, by circulating throughout the bloodstream and tissues to respond to injury/illness to attack unknown organisms?
What are Cells that fight Disease?
Food-borne illnesses, Food contaminated by bacteria or other microorganisms.
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting an inability to keep fluids down, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever.
What is Food Poisoning? (most commonly from E. Coli)
Example of Poisonous Bacteria
Grows in moist, warm, dark areas.
What is Fungi?
Proteins on the surfaces of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that trigger the immune system to attack.
What are Antigens?
Inflammatory response, Immune System
What are the bodies Chemical Defenses against Infectious Diseases?
Refers to when a person gets wounded by a type of tool or metal object.
Damages the Central Nervous System (CNS)
Symptoms include uncontrollable muscle contractions, paralysis, fever, lockjaw, sweating, death.
What is Tetanus (Clostridium tetani)?
Example of Poisonous Bacteria
These cells are formed in the bone marrow, help fight disease and makeup 1% of your blood.
What are White Blood Cells (WBC)?
When the body's immune system attacks its own cells.
What is an Autoimmune Response?
●Humans come into contact with infected animals
●Pathogens become resistant to existing drugs
●People lack appropriate immunizations
●Increased frequency of international travel
●Global food supply decreases
What are different ways Diseases can Emerge?
Skin, mucus membranes, cilia, saliva & tears, digestive system.
What are the bodies Physical Defenses against Infectious Diseases?
Adenoids, bone marrow, lymph nodes, peyer patches, spleen, thymus, tonsils.
What are Organs of the Immune System?
Neurtophils, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Lymphocytes, Basophils
What are Cells that fight Diseases?
The use of biological agents (bacteria, viruses and toxins that are used as weapons of warfare.)
What is Bioterrorism?
