The famous British naturalist and author of the "On the Origin of Species":

Charles Darwin

100

everything surrounding a particular living thing that affects its growth and health.

environment

When humans breed animals to try to get their offspring to have specific characteristics it is called... ?

selective breeding

200

XX and XY have a baby! It has a ____% chance of being XX.

50% (congrats, it's a giiiiiirrrrrrrlllll!)

200

True OR False: The phenotype is the combination of alleles found in our genes, and genotype is the characteristic expressed physically by those genes.

FALSE. The genotype is the combination of alleles found in our genes, and phenotype is the characteristic expressed physically by those genes.

Charles Darwin is most famous for his theory of .......... (do not say Evolution)

Natural Selection

the process of changing and adapting to an environment over time.

Parents Bb and Bb have a ___% chance of having a baby showing B.

75%

300
A genotype with 2 different alleles, one dominant and one recessive, is called ________________.

heterozygous

300

Name at least one scientist involved in the discovery of DNA.

James Watson, Francis Crick, and Rosalind Franklin

300

the change of organisms to better fit their environment and improve their chances of survival over time.

adaptation

300

the diversity of a population of organisms in a species is referred to as... (think of us in this class)

variation

400

Parents Bb and Bb have a ___% chance of having a baby carrying the b allele.

75% - a "carrier" is an organism with at least one recessive gene in the genotype.

400
The shape of DNA is a ________ ________.

double helix

400

The "Father of Genetics" who studied pea plants in the mid 1800s to learn about inheritance and recessive genetics.

Gregor Mendel (born in modern day Czech Republic! Buried in Brno OMG SO COOL WOW)

400

________ _________ causes populations of organisms to change as their environment changes, then allows surviving members to reproduce.

Natural Selection

400

Variation in a population is caused by _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

mutation

Humans have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs), so a human egg cell or sperm cell must have ____ chromosomes.

23 chromosomes

500

DNA is copied to make RNA, which is then taken to the ___________ to make ___________.

1. ribosomes 2. proteins

500

Who famously collected fossils and became known as the "First Paleontologist" ? (hint: She's English)

Mary Anning

500

Name 3 points of evidence for evolution. I'll start...

1. vestigal organs, like legs in whales...

2. embryology

3. fossil record

4. DNA (molecular biology)

5. comparitive anatomy

500

Explain CORRECTLY how a fossil is formed.

After an animal dies, the soft parts of its body decompose leaving the hard parts, like the skeleton, behind. This becomes buried by small particles of rock called sediment. As more layers of sediment build up on top, the sediment around the skeleton begins to compact and turn to rock.
