When looking at the American flag if I said that there are 50 white stars on it.  Is this a quaLitative or quaNtitative observation?

Do you use the Engineering Design Process when you are testing/experimenting to get an answer or when you are making something to help solve a problem?

making or designing something to solve a problem

What does CER stand for?

Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning

200

The metric unit used to measure the volume of a liquid

liter

200

An educated prediction written using an If...then statement.

Hypothesis

When looking at the American flag if I said that there are red and white stripes on it.  Is this a quaLitative or quaNtitative observation?

Qualitative observation

200

What is the first step in the Engineering Design Process?

Ask

200

What is the claim?

In an experiment students were testing how much table salt can dissolve in different temperature water. To do this they added 1 teaspoon of table salt to 1 cup of cold water in a glass cup and stir it continuously for 30 seconds at the same speed.  If all the salt dissolved they added another teaspoon of salt and stirred for another 30 seconds and so on until salt sank to the bottom of the cup.  They repeated the same steps with room temperature and hot water. They recorded how many teaspoons of salt were added until salt sank and sat at the bottom. What are 2 constants in this experiment?

1. amount of water (1 cup)

2. type of salt (table salt)

3. stir speed

4. type of cup (glass)

If I said that the 50 white stars probably represent the 50 states, would that be an observation or inference?

Inference

300

Do you write a hypothesis while going through the Engineering Design Process?

No.  You brainstorm and plan, but do not make a formal prediction.

300

What claim could you make about how heat affects the movement of molecules from the evidence below.

When a drop of food coloring is added to a cup of hot water at 180°F, the color spreads completely through the cup in 5 seconds, compared to 30 seconds in a cup of ice water at 35°F.

Adding heat to water speeds up the movement of its molecules.

What is one rule when using a ruler?

1. Begin at the beginning of the scale or the zero mark

2. Use the metric side

3. Do not twirl, drum, flick the ruler

Water temperature (cold, room temperature, hot)

A person walks into a room wearing a dripping wet raincoat and holding an open umbrella. What is your direct observation? What can you infer about the weather outside?"

Observation - the person is wet

Inference - It is raining outside

Students were asked to design a multi-layer filtration system inside a plastic bottle to turn a cup of dirty water into water that is visually clear. This filtration system must fit inside a 2 liter bottle, the water must pass through at least 3 filtering layers, and the filtering process must be completed in under 5 minutes.  The materials available are a clear 2 liter bottle, coffee filters, sand, coarse gravel, and charcoal, and rubber bands. What are 2 Constraints?

1. must fit inside a 2 liter bottle

2. need at least 3 layers

3. filtering process must take less than 5 minutes

4. limited materials

What claim can be written about how sunlight affects the growth of plants. from the following evidence:

In a classroom experiment, green bean plants grown under direct sunlight grew 12 centimeters and developed broad green leaves over 14 days. The identical plants kept in a dark closet grew 0 centimeters, turned yellow, and wilted.

Sunlight helps plants grow tall and healthy.

What are 2 rules while using a triple beam balance?

1. You must calibrate the balance before beginning

2. Start with the 100 beam, then the 10 beam and then the 1 beam.

3. Get eye level to read the measurement

4. Label your measurement in grams

The amount of salt that dissolved into the water. (in teaspoons)

"Read this short scene: 'Maya stared at her returned test, squeezed her eyes shut, and slowly slumped back into her chair.' What can you infer about her score, and which specific words observed in the text led you to that conclusion?"

Inference - she didn't get a good score on her test

Observations - squeezed her eyes shut and slumped back in her chair.

What is the Criteria?

Design a multi layer filtration system inside a plastic bottle that turns dirty water into clear water.
