Who are Engaged Readers?
This unit of reading volume measure equals 15 minutes of independent reading.
What is 1 step?
Sailing on the high seas, trekking through a mountain pass, or surviving on a deserted island, books in this genre are defined by the intense physical and emotional challenges faced by the characters and the exhilaration of their fight to survive the odds.
What is Adventure?
This title character’s repeated misunderstandings of various commands of her employer by taking figures of speech, such as “put the lights out,” literally, cause her to perform incorrect actions with a comical effect in this children’s book series.
Who is Amelia Bedelia?
This ARC Core component that appears twice in the daily lesson plans (first, after reading, and again after writing) involves students sharing ideas with partners and the class.
What is Accountable Talk?

Books of this series, all revolve around siblings Annie and Jack who discover that a treehouse in the woods near their home can transport them to different places and historical periods.
What is the Magic Treehouse series?
This describes the teacher's work of quietly watching students read to monitor engagement and making notes on a Status of the Class chart.
What is Kidwatching?
This adjective describes teacher- and parent-pleasing students who read because they are told to do so.
What is Compliant?
The place where a student records the number of steps of structured Independent Reading daily in school. Must be initialed by a teacher or home coach!

What is Being a “Book Whisperer” or “Book Whispering”?
Readers at this level are not yet using the predictable patterns and pictures to “read” Yellow Books independently. They need immersive and meaningful experiences with books right away!

Some wish to destroy the awful system in which they live, thereby restoring a healthy order to the world, while others merely want to escape.
