What has an exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae.

Myth or Fact:

Spiders are poisonous.

What is Myth.

First of all, “poisonous” and “venomous” are two distinctly different qualities: poisonous animals give off toxins which are absorbed when they are touched or eaten by attackers; venomous animals transmit toxins by injecting them into their victims.

The first stage of a butterfly life cycle is...

What is egg?

A butterfly starts life as a very small, round, oval or cylindrical egg.  The coolest thing about butterfly eggs, especially monarch butterfly eggs, is that if you look close enough you can actually see the tiny caterpillar growing inside of it. Some butterfly eggs may be round, some oval and some may be ribbed while others may have other features. The egg shape depends on the type of butterfly that laid the egg.

What is an Entomologist?

200

An eight-legged predatory arachnid with an unsegmented body consisting of a fused head and thorax and a rounded abdomen. These have fangs which inject poison into their prey, and most kinds spin webs in which to capture insects.

High School graduates with an interest in entomology find new ways to keep insects out of homes, schools and other public areas. They may work with chemicals or repellents in pest management.

What is a Pest Control Worker.

Pest control workers earned a mean annual salary of $34,080 as of May 2015, and their employment outlook predicted a 1% decrease from 2014 until 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported.

A predatory myriapod invertebrate with a flattened elongated body composed of many segments. Most segments bear a single pair of legs.

Myth or Fact:

The daddy long leg spider is the most venomous spider on the planet but its fangs are to fragile to pierce human skin.

What is Myth.

To the general public it was widely spread that the daddy long leg spider was the most venomous, however, the daddy long leg spider has no venom glands meaning no venom.

The second stage of a butterfly life cycles is called this stage.

What is the larva (caterpillar) stage?

Butterfly larvae are actually what we call caterpillars.  Caterpillars do not stay in this stage for very long and mostly, in this stage all they do is eat.  Caterpillars need to eat and eat so they can grow quickly. When a caterpillar is born, they are extremely small. When they start eating, they instantly start growing and expanding.  Their exoskeleton (skin) does not stretch or grow, so they grow by “molting” (sheding the outgrown skin) several times while it grows.

Entomologists with advanced degrees can study how insects spread disease or how bugs infest houses. They might study why some insects help crops, while others harm food supplies. They may present and publish their findings in scientific journals.

What are Scientific Researchers.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expected wildlife biologists and zoologists, which includes entomologists, to see a 4% increase in employment between 2014 and 2024. Their mean annual salary was $64,230 as of May 2015.

A smaller variants of this produce nothing more than a painful, localized reaction, not unlike a bee sting. Larger species, however, administer more venom through a bite and can produce more extreme pain. While these bites can be extremely painful, they are not generally fatal to humans.

Myth or Fact

Spiders have blood.

What is Fact

Yes. Spiders have an open, blood circulatory system. This sort of blood system has a heart, arteries and veins but no capillaries. The heart is tubular with a single cavity and with valves to maintain the flow of blood always in the same direction. The spider's blood is pale blue due to the presence of haemocyanin dissolved in the lymph. There are some blood cells but they are for wound-healing and defense against infection - there are no special blood cells like the human red cells which carry oxygen around the body.

The third stage of the butterfly life cycle is called this.

What is the Pupa (Chrysalis) stage?

The pupa stage is one of the coolest stages of a butterfly’s life.  As soon as a caterpillar is done growing and they have reached their full length/weight, they form themselves into a pupa, also known as a chrysalis.  From the outside of the pupa, it looks as if the caterpillar may just be resting, but the inside is where all of the action is.  Inside of the pupa, the caterpillar is rapidly changing.  Now, as most people know, caterpillars are short, stubby and have no wings at all.  Within the chrysalis the old body parts of the caterpillar are undergoing a remarkable transformation, called ‘metamorphosis,’ to become the beautiful parts that make up the butterfly that will emerge. Tissue, limbs and organs of a caterpillar have all been changed       by the time the pupa is finished, and is now ready for the final stage of a butterfly’s life cycle.

The FBI hires entomologists to help investigate crimes. These specific entomologist study bugs at crime scenes to help determine the cause and time of a death, as well as the possibility that a body was moved after death. Many are researchers who work as consultants for coroners, lawyers and medical examiners.

What are Forensic Entomologists?

While the BLS doesn't specifically have data for forensic entomologists, the general category of forensic science technicians earned a mean annual salary of $60,090 as of 2015. They could see employment increase by 27% between 2014 and 2024, the BLS expected.

Myth or Fact

Camel spiders are huge spiders that eat camels and chase people.

What is Myth

Camel spiders only get about 6 inches long, and do not feed on camels. As for chasing people they are not chasing the person directly, but rather the shadow cast so they can get out of the heat.

The fourth stage of a butterfly life cycle is called this.

What is an adult butterfly?

Finally, when the caterpillar has done all of its forming and changing inside the pupa an adult butterfly emerge.  When the butterfly first emerges from the chrysalis, both of the wings are going to be soft and folded against its body. This is because the butterfly had to fit all its new parts inside of the pupa.  As soon as the butterfly has rested after coming out of the chrysalis, it will pump blood into the wings in order to get them working and flapping–then they get to fly.  Usually within a three or four-hour period, the butterfly will master flying and will search for a mate in order to reproduce.
