Rollover breathing; little ones often do not have the upper body strength or stamina to hold themselves up in the vertical position for long. We want to encourage head down swimming. If they can achieve a rollover then they can also float on their back. Which we encourage during an emergency.

Put their head on your shoulder with one hand on their neck or back of their head and one hand on their back, slowing removing your hands and sliding them off your shoulder as they get more comfortable.
