This is a group of musicians playing different musical instruments under the direction of a conductor. It can be large or small, depending on the pieces that are performed.

This is one of the bigger instruments in the string family. It plays notes that are lower than the viola, though not as low as the string bass. The strings are more than twice as long as the strings on the viola, producing rich, and warm lower notes. The symphony orchestra will usually include 8-12 of this instrument.

These were originally called sackbuts. The word sackbut may possibly come from the French word 'sacquer', which means 'to draw out'. I am the only brass instrument with a slide.

This is a unique instrument, and one of the most recently invented! It is a skillfully hammered 55-gallon oil barrel which has been carefully tuned by hand to produce perfect musical tones.

This is slightly bigger than the violin and plays notes that are lower in pitch. The tone is darker and less brilliant than the violin.

This wind instrument has a reed and the body is made of brass, and so it forms a bridge between the woodwind and brass sections of the orchestra.

To make a sound on this instrument, the player must strike a bar with a mallet. When the performer strikes a bar with a hard mallet, it produces a bright and sharp sound. When the performer strikes a bar with a soft mallet a more muted sound is produced.

This is a brass wind musical instrument, created in France about 1830 by adding valves to the post horn. It is usually in B flat and is the same size as the B flat trumpet, but has a more conical bore. It has a less brilliant tone but greater agility than the trumpet

The piano was first referred to under this name which means soft loud instrument. Because, unlike the harpsichord, it allowed the player to control the degree of loudness and softness of a note by the way he/she would strike a key.
