How does the author establish the viewpoint of schools should have uniforms?

Over the last few years schools have really has to enforce a dress code. Fashions are changing and so too does the dress code. I strongly believe that schools should have uniforms for the students. The reasoning behind having a dress code is to ensure that students are dressed appropriate for the learning environment. For example, students have been seen wearing crop tops or jeans that go to low, which doesn’t look appropriate. Some students would argue that this limits what they can wear, and finding clothes can be hard. Yet, there are students that are still able to find clothes to wear and stay in style. A compromise could be made in which some old rules about the dress code can be re-evaluated and possible changed.

A. By showing that kids are wearing uniforms.

B. By showing that kids will not wear uniforms.

C. By showing that students should wear uniforms to school to stay appropriate.

D. By showing that students are not doing well in school.

The surface of the Earth is divided into pieces called “tectonic plates.”  These plates move. When the plates rub against each other, they do not move smoothly. When the plates do not move smoothly, earthquakes result.  Some parts of the world get more earthquakes than other parts. The parts of the earth that get most earthquakes are near the edges of these plates.

How does the author establish their viewpoint that movies should be in schools?

Movies and TV shows seem to be popping up everywhere. It seems that you can watch these anywhere and anytime. Movies are even been seen in schools. I firmly believe that these movies do have a place in our school, because they can be educational. I have seen in some classes such as science that uses movies to help with understanding with programming such as Bill Nye the Science Guy. Some would argue that movies are just a place filler and do not help with learning. Although, there are several educational movies in science, history and more that helps students with their understanding of the topic. I propose that movies should be allowed in the schools.

The text structure of the passage.

The ability of a building to withstand the stress of an earthquake depends upon its type of construction, shape, mass distribution, and rigidity. Different combinations are used. To reduce stress, first, the building's ground floor must be flexible.  One method is to support the ground floor with extremely rigid, hollow columns, while the rest of the building is supported by flexible columns located inside the hollow columns. A different method is to use rollers or rubber pads to separate the base columns from the ground, allowing the columns to shake parallel during an earthquake.  Next, the outdoor walls should be made with stronger and more reinforced materials such as steel or reinforced concrete. Then, to help prevent collapsing, the roof should be made out of light-weight materials.

How does the author establish that students should only get trophies when they earn them?

Although many parents would argue that their child deserves a trophy for participating in a sport, I firmly believe that children need to earn their trophies.  Moreover, children need to perform superior to competition in order to get a trophy to recognize high achievement. For example, Olympic medalists only receive medals when they out-perform their competition in their sport. In contrast, parents would like their children to feel good about their performance, however, a trophy and a pat on the back are two different things.Students should only receive trophies when they are deserved.

A. By showing students are not getting enough trophies.

B. By showing that students should only get medals when they outperform others and not for just everything they do.

C. By showing that students should get medals for everything that they do.

D. By showing that trophies and medals are the best.

The view point the author would agree with?

Sports seems to be a big deal in schools these days. Many students are athletes that play multiple sports. I firmly believe that students should be able to play more than one sport in a year. The reasoning behind having students play more than one sports it that it gives students a chance to work with others and build teamwork. I have witnessed students that did not get along, play on a sport together and were able to become friends. Some would argue that students are not able to do more than one sport because their classwork suffers. However, student athletes are held at a higher level and need to keep a certain grade to participate, thus eliminating the idea that they cannot keep up in their classes.

When a river receives a lot of extra water it may flood.  During a flood there is plenty of water, and most people wouldn’t think that dehydration was a serious risk, but flood waters are mostly polluted and not safe to drink.   People who drink the contaminated water may suffer from illnesses or diseases such as typhoid.  You can prepare for flooding by filling many containers with fresh clean drinking water.  You can also use sandbags to protect your house and to soak up the water.  Be prepared and be safe.

How does the author establish the viewpoint that food should be allowed in the classroom?

There is gum, wrappers and crumbs everywhere. It seems that there is more food in the classroom than ever before. Some would argue that food should not be in the classroom, however, I strong feel that food should be allowed in the classroom. A good reason why students should be able to have food in the classroom is that it keeps them on task without having to be hungry. I have seen students that are hungry in classroom perform better when they are allowed to eat in the room. However, I do agree that some food should not be eaten in the classroom, but overall it is to the benefit of the class to allow food for more concentration. I propose that eating should be allowed in our classrooms.

A. By showing that students perform better in school when they can eat in the classroom.

B. By showing that students are leaving a mess in our schools.

C. By showing that students do not perform well when they eat in the classroom.

The text structure of the passage.

Lightning and thunder are related events.  Lightning is a sudden, violent flash of electricity that occurs between a cloud and the ground or between two clouds in the sky. A lightning bolt can be several miles long and can be straight or forked. It is very hot, with an average temperature of 34 000 degrees Celsius. This causes the air around the electric bolt to expand, producing lots of sound energy. It is this sound energy that we hear as thunder.  So, lightning and thunder are caused by the same event, but lightning is light energy, or electromagnetic energy, whereas thunder is sound energy.  Thus, we see lightning and hear thunder.
