Communication Theory & Media Literacy
The act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else.
What is Communication?
The room between the top of the subjects’ head and the top of the video frame.
What is Head Room?
A popular memory card used primarily for camera and extra phone storage.
What is an SD Card?
The process of selecting the best portions of raw video footage and combining them into an order that makes sense
What is Editing?
A type of light, usually directly from the source, that casts a solid-line shadow.
What is hard light?
Any type of communication that uses media or technology to reach a large audience.
What is Mass Media?
Generally an Extreme Wide Shot, used to establish the location where action is taking place
What is an Establishing Shot?
The device that attaches to the camera and allows it to be securely mounted to the tripod
What is the Tripod Plate?
transferring video clips from an SD card or Hard Drive into the software interface for editing
What is Importing?
The rule that states that you draw an imaginary line between these two characters (or subjects) and try to keep your camera(s) on the same side
What is the 180 Degree Rule?
Someone who gets the information and decodes the message (the audience)
Who is a Receiver?
The shot is focused tightly on the facial features, usually just their eyes or mouth, allowing the viewer to see the emotional reaction of the on camera subject.
What is an Extreme Close Up?
the part of the camcorder that allows you to view video signal being recorded, as well as camera settings and playback
What is the Viewfinder?
The area in the editing software where video clips are lined up and edited
What is the Timeline?
Additional video that is used to help tell the story in a visually appealing manner, reinforce a point the speaker is making, and cover edits.
What is B-Roll?
The dual processes of turning thoughts into messages, and then turning messages into thoughts.
What is encoding and decoding?
This rule divides the screen into an imaginary tic-tac-toe grid, which allows you to frame the subject on intersecting points to create a more visually appealing image.
What is the Rule of Thirds?
the handle attached to the tripod which allows the camera operator to move the camera in any direction horizontally and vertically
What is the Pan Arm?
saving the contents of your timeline as one video file, with a specific resolution and file format

What is Media Literacy?
The space between the subjects’ face and the side of the frame in the direction that they are looking or talking.
What is Talk Room, Nose Room, or Look Room?
The camera is placed on a tripod positioned low and shooting upwards. This type of shot is used to make a character look larger or more powerful.
What is a Low Angle shot?
a title graphic at the bottom of the screen, which is used to identify a person who is speaking or being shown on camera
What is a Lower Third Graphic?
A style of lighting that accentuates shadows and dark tones.
