How do you save a Logic Project?

Command+S

100

Name 3 parts of a drumkit.

kick, snare, hi hat, toms, ride, crash, rim, clap etc.

100

What do synthesizers do?

They generate sound using waveforms.

100

What do samplers do?

They play back pre-recorded sounds.

100

What is quantization?

The process used to make MIDI notes sound perfectly in time.

200

How do you create a new track and open the library?

Option+Command+N and Y for library.

200

What are the 3 ways you can program drums in Logic?

Software Instrument, Pattern, Session Player.

200
Name 3 types of waveforms.

sine, sawtooth, square, triangle, pulse, noise

200

Explain how to make an instrument out of a straw.

Cut a triangle at the end of the straw and practice different pressure with your lips while blowing air into it.

200

What is velocity?

How hard you hit the key.

300

How do you open the Inspector? What is the Inspector?

I. It's the channel strip where you find your instrument and your effects.

300

Name the software instrument used to program electronic drums in Logic

Drum Machine Designer

300

What is a filter and what does it do?

Filters change the timbre of a sound by cutting out certain frequencies.

300

What is another word for amp?

volume

300

What is an LFO and how does it work?

Low Frequency Oscillator. It's too low for us to hear, so we use the shape and the rate to change a parameter on a synth.

400

How do you change the color of a region?

Option+C

400

What parameters can you change to make your drums sound more realistic?

velocity & quantization strength

400

What is an envelope? What are the 2 most important parts of and envelope and what do they do?

an envelope changes parameters of a sound over time based on how we play the keys. The most common envelope is an amp envelope which controls volume over time. The most important parts of an envelope are attack (how long it takes for the sound to come in when you press the key) and release (how long it takes for the sound to trail off when you let go of the key)

400
What is a sample loop?

A part of a recorded sample that loops/repeats as you hold the key down.

400

What is the most common filter on a synthesizer and how does it work?

Low Pass Filter. It lets low frequencies pass through and cuts high frequencies out.

500

Explain in full how to bounce your project to mp3.

Click C to bring up the cycle region at the top of your timeline. Click and drag the boundaries of the yellow bar from the beginning of your song to the end. Add 1 extra bar at the end of the bounce. Click File>bounce>project or section. Choose mp3 and name and save in the correct location.

500

Explain how to make a drum arrangement in Logic without being repetitive.

Create a drum pattern, then use option+click+drag to copy it a few times. Change each repetition of the drums (by adding or taking away drum parts) to keep it from being repetitive.

500

What is the cutoff frequency? What is resonance?

The cutoff frequency is the point on a synthesizer's filter where it begins to "cut off" or remove frequencies above it (on a LPF). Resonance is a boost in volume at the cutoff frequency.

500

Explain in full how to sample a straw in Logic's Quick Sampler.

Create an instrument out of a straw. Record it into Logic's Quick Sampler. Adjust the sample loop to repeat a section as you hold the key down. Choose your polyphony. Change your filter, envelope and/or LFO to customize the sound.

You aren't getting any sound. How do you troubleshoot?

Check where your headphones are plugged in. Open Logic's Audio Preferences. Make sure the output is set to wherever your headphones are plugged in. If they're plugged into the iMac, choose "external headphones." If they're plugged into the interface, choose "Scarlett 2i2"
