B. atherosclerotic plaques

C. membrane fluidity at low temperatures but a decrease in membrane fluidity at high temperatures

A lab technician grows a liquid bacterial culture overnight, in media without any antibiotics. The next morning, the culture is cloudy. She takes a small amount of this culture and puts it into new media containing tetracycline. The next day, she checks the culture and the media is not cloudy. What happened?

A. The bacterial culture grew the first night but not the second night

B. The bacteria were resistant to the antibiotic tetracycline

C. The bacteria were in the lag phase after the first night of growth

D. The bacteria were in the stationary phase after the second night of growth

A

A. replication

B. reverse transcription

C. translation

D. mutation

Define a cladogram.

a branching diagram that shows the relationship between species

200

What is the major similarity between cooled and heated glassware?

They look the same to us

200

Name the (2) ways in which you can observe.

Using your (5) senses and then form a question. During the experiment observe and record qualitative and quantitative information

200

Define homologous structure and analogous structure. Give an example for each.

Homologous: Structures that are similar in different species due to a common ancestor but look different on the outside, bat wing whale flipper human arm.

Analogous: Structures that evolved independently in different species due to similar environmental stressors or mutations, cat leg and prayer mantis leg.

200

100kg is how many grams? What phrase do we use the remember our metric units?

100,000. King Henry Came Over For Chocolate Milk

200

What animal is most closely related to humans?

Chimpanzees

300
What is the safety procedure if acid gets on skin or eyes?

Lab partner should inform teacher, wash eyes or skin immediately

300

Define independent variable and dependent variable. What axis on a graph do each go to?

Independent: What "I" change, only 1 on x-axis. Dependent: what is affected by independent variable, on y-axis.

300

Define vestigial structure and provide (2) examples.

Structure that is now nonfunctional or reduced in function, answers will vary

300

What is pointillism? How did we use it in class?

Using dots of different sizes and colors to make an image, answers will vary.

300

If there are (4) branches on a cladogram. Branch (1) is closest to common ancestor and branch (4) is furthest. Which branch would be most closely related to branch (4)?

Branch (3)

400

When diluting an acid always pour the ______ into the ________.

acid, water

400

What are (3) control variables in the Benedict's Test? What are (2) control groups?

Answers will vary. Positive control group = sugar water, negative control group = water.

400

Define embryology and provide (1) example.

The study of embryos and their environment

How we can view certain homologous structures and determine a common ancestor!

Example: all vertebrates including humans and chickens look the same/similar at first.

400

When using a micropipette, what stop do you go to to take up a sample? What stop to release?

1st, 2nd

400

In modern science, do evolutionary biologists solely develop cladograms based on morphology?

No, use DNA, homologous vs. analogous, etc.

Explain the proper way to use a bunsen burner.

Always wear safety goggles when using a Bunsen burner. Never heat a chemical that you aren’t instructed to. Point open test tubes away from yourself and others when heating. If a flame comes toward you, turn off gas immediately. Never heat a closed container, it may cause an explosion. Use tongs or heat-resistant gloves to hold hot objects. To light: turn on gas then immediately use match/lighter to turn on flame. Adjust the flame so there is a clear blue flame surrounding an inner blue cone.

Draw gel electrophoresis: Include wells, gel, power source, positive and negative electrode, longer bands, shorter bands, and what way DNA would move.

Student drawn answer can be checked by viewing amoeba sisters gel electrophoresis video.

500

Define model organisms. Provide an example of a model organism.

Model Organisms are species that have similar DNA to us and we use them to better understand disease. Answers will vary.

500

When using a micropipette, describe the proper technique used when holding the pipette including: when gathering a sample, and when loading on gel electrophoresis.

1: Hold with thumb on top button, hold sample in one hand and pipette in the other.

2: Both elbows on table, both hands on micropipette.

Draw a cladogram and include the animals: worm, spider, ant, cricket, fly, dragonfly, and butterfly. Include the traits: wings, double set of wings, curly antennae, 6 legs, legs, abdominal appendages, segmented body, crushing mouthparts.

Student drawn, can be compared to cladogram activity given in class.
