Death of someone that they are close to, family break-up like a divorce, upset with a friend, bullying, they are lonely, having trouble with their behavior, stressed out, etc..
Name two things that we might work on when I visit your classroom.
Bullying, Friendship skills, regulation, Being Safe, Making good choices, Coping skills, mental health tips, highschool prep, etc.
School Counselors do more than just work with children. Name two things that you think that a school counselor does in addition to working with kids.
Talk to Parents, Problem Solve with Teachers, Principals and other staff members, Work on Committees, Run Programs, etc.. promote well-being and wellness, really cool bulletin boards

2 dogs (used to be 3 dogs and one gecko!)
How do you get to see a school counselor?
* Ask permission from your teacher to see me
If 12 and above- you can come knock on my door, or leave me a note with your name. I need permission from parents if you are under 12, but would encourage communication with parents regardless.
What do we say if Ms. Sam is coming to get a student.
Nothing! Please be respectful and know it may be hard for someone to ask for help, so making comments will be detrimental to their success.

Building rapport (connections), promoting mental health
Who can name two things that I love doing when I am not at school?
Hiking, Reading, Watching Movies and Fun TV Shows, video games, snowboarding, Spending time with my Family and Friends, training and spending time with dogs/ animals
Why did I become a School Counselor?
I wanted to be a teacher for a long time, but then realized being a therapist in a school was the dream job (plus kids are pretty cool).
Will I get to see you right away if I write a note?
That depends. If you are having a real emergency, I will get to you as soon as possible. If you just want to have lunch with me, it might take a while since I have many students.
Will there ever be group settings?
Yes! We will be continuing Preventure, which will work with Grade 7 and 8s on risk taking coping- based on your personalities- More info to come.
How many kids do I work with at once?
One on One, the whole classroom and groups
