The materials settled in layers in the vial. The heavier sand settled to the bottom, and the lighter material (the flour) settled on top of the sand. Because the sand and flour separated into layers, we were able to identify these ingredients.

In other words, the sand and flour separated into different layers that settled in the vial so we could see and identify these two ingredients.
