Edith could not see Betty because the government prevent German immigrants from visiting each other, for fear of a German spy. When Edith was able to see Betty, though, she was upset because Betty seemed to have a great new life in America, and had a new sister, which Edith feared had replaced her.

Aunt Mildred treated Edith like a servant because this was happening during the Great Depression, and money was running low. Aunt Mildred wanted to appear wealthy, so she forced Edith to behave like a servant and do chores, cook, clean, etc.

When her class said the Pledge of Alliegence on her first day, she got upset because it reminded her of when people heiled Hitler in Germany, which was a threat to Jews.

Aunt Mildred was worried that Edith would tell Mrs. Goldstein that Aunt Mildred treated her like a servant. This worried her because they received $48 a month for taking care of Edith, which payed most of their bills, and Aunt Mildred's extra luxuries.
