Prevalence

100

What is prevalence?

•The degree to which something is widespread

•commonness, frequency, frequentness

•Example: “the percentage of a population that is affected with a particular disease at a given time”

•How big is the threat of IUU fishing in your area of interest?

200

How do we assess IUUF?

Conducting I-FIT

200
Components of I-FIT

prevalence, vulnerability, and response

200

How do we measure prevalence?

•Pag mas madaming huling illegal fishers à ibig sabihin ba mas madaming illegal fisher? O mas gumaling lang ang enforcement? O parehas?

•Kelangan malinaw ang interpretasyon ng mga gagamiting sukatan ng “prevalence” para tama ang makukuha nating impormasyon na base sa realidad.

•Fisheries collapse

•Damage to ecosystems

•Harm to people

•Damage to properties

•Loss of income of fishers

•Damages relationships with other municipalities / countries

•Lower government income

•Limited data for fisheries management

•Link to other crimes

Why should we assess IUUF?

  1. solving IUU fishing requires a suite of responses, and is not only about fishery law enforcement; and thus IUU fishing responses should also focus on other interventions and not solely on law enforcement

    2. IUU fishing is a complex issue and requires an in-depth assessment to enable us to identify longer-lasting solutions

400

Reducing IUU Fishing requires a multi-faceted approach. These can be in done through what? Give 1.

●laws and ordinances prescribing actions or prohibitions

●licensing and registration

●catch documentation/auxiliary invoices

●information and communication

●incentives and awards or name and shame campaign

●livelihood support to minimize fishing pressure

●fishery law enforcement operations

●other programs in support of sustainable fisheries

400

Why is it important to assess vulnerability? Give 1

1. We need to understand the physical, ecological, and socio-economic factors that make our areas vulnerable or exposed to specific types of IUU Fishing

2.We need to calibrate our responses to address the factors that make our areas vulnerable or exposed to specific types of IUU Fishing

3.There are vulnerability factors that we may be able to address but there are vulnerability factors that we have to live with.

What is I-FIT

Illegal, Unreported And Unregulated (IUU) Fishing Index And Threat Assessment Tool

500

What are we assessing?

Threat to life, ecosystem, and food security

500

What is I-FIT all about?

To find long-lasting solutions and targeted responses to specific IUU fishing threats in the target area.

500

Why do we need a response?

To address issues in IUUF and to solve conflicts. Responses should be reducing prevalence by addressing vulnerabilities
