Why do leaves change color in the fall?

In the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process.

Leaves contain many pigments that absorb and reflect light. A very important pigment is chlorophyll. This is used during photosynthesis to create oxygen. Chlorophyll absorbs all the colors except green.

When leaves start to die, chlorophyll levels decrease, and you can see the other colors.

How can you measure the age of a tree?

1. Without cutting it down

First measure the circumference of the tree, 4 & 1/2 above ground level. Then you want to find the diameter by using a math equation (Circumference/pi = diameter). Finally, you can google the growth factor of each tree and multiply it with the diameter to get an age estimation.

43.63 diameter X 4.7  growth factor = approx 205 years old.

2. Fallen Tree

If a tree has fallen down , you can estimate the age by the number of rings. The way the rings form is that during late summer/fall you get these dark rings and during spring/early summer you get light rings. So, you start from the center and count the number of dark rings. Year dark ring represent 1 year.
