Describe the setting of Ferndean Manor. How does this setting affect the mood?

Ferndean Manor is described as isolate, unhealthy, unsuitable, and dark. When Jane comes up to the house she can barely see it, it is so covered in bushes and the walls are decaying. This makes it adds a sad, mysterious, and eerie mood to the book.

How did St. John know that Jane was talking about Mr. Rochester when she said she couldn’t leave to go to India before she knows she “cannot be of greater use by remaining in it than by leaving by it.” (Page 450 for context)

St. John knew that Jane was talking about Mr. Rochester because she said, “I have had long endured painful doubt, and I can go nowhere till by some means that doubt is removed.” Since St. John now knows Jane's whole story, he knows that she didn’t want to stay with Mr. Rochester but still thinks about him constantly and deep down wants to know he is ok
