Describe the candle in a bottle experiment and why it worked!

Candle in a bottle experiment is where you place a lit candle over a plate of water. The water will start to rise, but not much. If you put a touch of rubbing alcohol around the bottle and then place it over the candle, the flame will ignite the alcohol, creating a vacuum effect and causing the water to rise quickly.
