Anyone else weirded out that we haven't had any hurricanes in the Atlantic this year? This is due in part to the El Niño Southern Oscillation. Can anyone describe how the ENSO works and why it's reducing Atlantic tropical cyclonic activity?
El Niño is a natural climate pattern defined by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
- Trade Winds Weaken: Normally, easterly trade winds blow warm water toward Asia. During El Niño, these winds weaken or reverse.
- Warm Water Shifts: Warm water sloshes back toward the central and eastern Pacific.
- Jet Stream Moves: The Pacific jet stream shifts and stretches eastward, changing global weather pathways.
Why El Niño Suppresses Atlantic Hurricanes:
- Wind Shear: El Niño warms the tropical Pacific, which changes atmospheric pressure and creates strong vertical wind shear (fast-moving winds high in the atmosphere) over the Caribbean and Atlantic.
Tearing Storms Apart: This wind shear rips apart the tops of developing thunderstorms, making it very hard for them to organize and grow into tropical storms or hurricanes.
Drier Air: El Niño patterns also bring drier air to the region, which further stops storms from forming.
