  • Arius: Arius denied the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ; regarding our Lord Jesus Christ as not consubstantial with the Father but that He was created. He said Jesus is not God; He is something more than human but He can’t be completely God. He thought if we say Jesus is fully God and the father is fully God then that means we worship two Gods and that can’t be true because we worship one God, therefore Jesus in human form must not be fully God. He also thought that God has no beginning, so how come the Son has a beginning and he is God

Ephesus:

He believed that St. Mary gave birth to a mere human and that Divinity descended and filled this human; Thus the Virgin Mary would be called the "Mother of Jesus" (Christokos), and not the "Mother of God" (Theotokos).

Explain how iconography is not idolatry. Protestants do not believe in the pictures and icons in the Orthodox Church or in the statues in the Catholic Church. They consider them against the second commandment, in which the Lord says: “You shall not make for yourself any carved image."

the veneration of religious artifacts is not a sin. Worship is reserved to the Holy Trinity alone. We do not honor the material from which icons are manufactured but rather the honor pertains to whatever the icon represent (Lord Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, The cross, saints etc.). Icons are not meant to be worshipped or venerated as something holy in themselves, in the way that idols were; the reverence shown to an icon is not to the artwork, but rather to the person or event which it portrays. An icon is meant to be a window into the spiritual world, used to help the believer to contemplate spiritual matters and to put him into a prayerful frame of mind, as a reminder of events in the Bible, and of the life of Christ and the saints. The centre of the Christian Faith is that “the Word became flesh” (John 1:1), and thus it is not surprising that the loving and merciful face of our Lord Jesus Christ is the subject of many icons.
