Review their billing statement or insurance explanation of benefits (EOB) to understand the charge in question

If the charge is correct,  explain it in a clear, respectful manner—breaking down the costs, co-pays, deductibles, and any insurance adjustments.  

If you notice an error,  assure the patient that you will escalate the issue to the billing department/supervisor for review.
