Once upon a time, Queen Nadia ordered her subjects to bake 500 cakes, so each of her subjects could have one. Just when the frosting was done, Queen Nadia's royal census-taker rushed in, and declared "My Queen! There's been a miscount! We have not 500 subjects, but 1,000! That's twice as much!" The Queen stopped, and thought about what to do, since she was level-headed, and did not like to panic. She called in her royal mathematician, and asked her what she thought of the situation. She measured, and calculated, and drew complicated diagrams on huge pieces of paper. Then, when the Queen was starting to worry that the mathematician would never find the answer, the mathematician suddenly shouted "Eureka!" and made everyone in the Queen's chamber jump. "I've got it!" she continued; "all we need to do is cut each cake into pieces, and everyone can still have an equal amount!"

How many pieces did the mathematician tell the queen to cut the cakes into?
