Housing is expensive in big cities due to the large number of people that are trying to live in a small number of dwellings. This creates competition among buyers, driving the price upwards. 

The downtown core has many jobs, resources, and entertainment facilities. These are highly sought after and so people are willing to pay high prices to live near them.
