During Stampede week, you can find these FREE all over the city; Its a good place to take your family in the morning before heading to the stampede, or make a pit stop before work to fuel up for the day.

What are pancake breakfasts? In 1923, the first free Stampede breakfast was held at a campsite just outside the Canadian Pacific Railway station close to downtown Calgary. Jack Morton, a chuck wagon driver, invited his loved ones and visitors to enjoy free pancakes at the camp, creating a tradition that still exists today.

What is Sunscreen or Sunblock? Apart from umbrellas and hats, ancient cultures used a variety of sunscreens made from herbal extracts or mineral crusts to protect against the sun's rays. These early sunscreens included ingredients like rice bran oil, iron, clay and tar.

A pioneer of our time, this famous man is featured on the $10 bill and was the first prime minister of Canada.

Who is John A. McDonald? We all know Sir John A. Macdonald from the modern day $10 bill, but according to the Library and Collections Canada, in 1935, Macdonald, along with Sir Wilfrid Laurier, were the first Canadians to have their portraits on our national currency. Macdonald was featured the $500 note and Laurier was on the $1,000.

Who was Guy Weadick? Guy Weadick visited Calgary while with a travelling western showcase in 1908. The city inspired him, and he thought it was on the brink of modernity but still firmly rooted in its "Old West" origins. He believed it would be the perfect place to stage a "Frontier Days and Cowboy Championship Contest."

These type of shoes can only be worn during the summer months and have taken several names over the years. The shoe only require two toes to stay on your feet.

What are flip flops or Thongs? Flip-flops are a type of sandal, typically worn as a form of casual wear. They consist of a flat sole held loosely on the foot by a Y-shaped strap known as a toe thong that passes between the first and second toes and around both sides of the foot.

What is the beaver? The world’s largest beaver dam stretches 850 meters deep in the thick wilderness of northern Alberta. It was discovered after being spotted on a satellite image in 2007, but scientists believe multiple generations of beavers have been working on the dam since the 1970s.

This rodeo sport is considered one of the most dangerous sports in the world; All you need is a cowboy, an eight second clock and a fired up bovine.

What is bull riding? Bull riding,  rodeo event in which the contestant attempts to ride a bucking bull for eight seconds while holding with one hand a braided rope made of nylon or Manila that is wrapped around the animal’s chest. A weighted cow bell attached to the rope pulls it free when the ride is over. No stirrups, bridle, or saddle are used; the rider’s arm absorbs the full force of the bull’s bucking.

What is the summer solstice?  also known as midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). For that hemisphere, the summer solstice is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight.

What is Nunavut? Nunavut is a massive, sparsely populated territory of northern Canada, forming most of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Its islands have expanses of tundra, craggy mountains and remote villages, accessible only by plane or boat. It's known for its indigenous Inuit people's artwork, carvings and handmade clothing.

This building in downtown Calgary is used for the stampede and is home to the Calgary flames.

What is the Scotiabank Saddledome?  Located in Stampede Park in the southeast end of downtown Calgary, the Saddledome was built in 1983 to replace the Stampede Corralas the home of the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League, and to host ice hockey and figure skatingat the 1988 Winter Olympics.

To kick off stampede, thousands of people line the streets of downtown Calgary and tune into CBC to watch this stampede opening.

What is the Calgary Stampede Parade? Getting up with the roosters, pulling on cowboy boots, and dusting off hats retrieved from the back of the closet – for thousands of people, these rituals spell the start of the annual pilgrimage to downtown Calgary to experience the parade that kicks off the annual 10-day Stampede. This year's parade marshall was Mark McMorris, Canadian Olympic Snowboarder.

This can be a cheap place to take your family for summer vacation; You can picnic, swim, put your toes in the sand, and relax all in one place.

What is the beach? You no longer have to travel a far lake or the ocean to find a beach. Most beaches in Calgary can be found right in your community built by the city. The closest beach to us is at Midnapore Lake. Only a 5 minute drive from here to there.
