What is the definition of a Social Skill?
Social means getting along with people and Skill is something you learn, practice and master. So, a social skill is your ability to get along with the people around you using specific skills you have learned.

Rules are important to ensure a safe and positive environment for all- students and staff. We cannot do whatever we want whenever we want.

Self-control is controlling how you think, feel and act. Examples: Lack of (No) Self-Control: Kicking, screaming, throw self on floor. Disrespect Violence, Aggression Destroying other’s property Put people down, name calling, teasing, bullying Swearing at people Stealing, cheating Has Self-Control: Can choose between right and wrong behavior. What is something you have learned about ANGER?
Anger is a normal feeling- just like sad and happy. What matters is how you HANDLE your anger.

Showing that you care: 1. Look at the person- determine how they are feeling by their actions (mad, sad, confused) 2. Ask the person how they are feeling to make sure you have it right 3. Do or say something to let the person know you understand.

If a resident is not respectful, responsible, ready to learn, they will stay at the IC. If you hurt someone's feelings, you should apologize. If you break something, you have to pay for it. Aggressive Behavior results in holds or lost points. Any others?

Skill Steps: 1. Identify your feeling (you are probably mad about something) 2. Stop and Think. 3. Relax. Must use a calming strategy. 4. Decide how you are going to stay in control (examples of keeping control of self). 5. Think about or talk to someone about your choices. 6. Got control yet? Act.

What are the most important things to remember when managing anger?
Control your anger, do not let your anger control you. Talk about or resolve your anger right away- it becomes dangerous when it is "stuffed." It is okay to be angry, it is NEVER ok to hurt someone physically or emotionally when you are angry. Everyone must have strategies to deal with their anger in their own way.

Listening - Why is it important to listen to the teacher while they are talking? What are some steps to help listen better?
To know what to do and how to do it. To be able to follow directions. To learn better- like in reading, writing, math and so on. If you don't listen, you won't understand and will have a harder time learning. 1. Stop what you are doing and sit quietly in your seat 2. Look at the speaker, make eye contact 3. Ignore distractions 4. Think about the information you just heard 5. Ask questions if you need to better understand 6. Repeat the information to yourself or write it down

-Watch staff model (show me) the skill and learn from them. -Practice through role-play's in group. -Doing Group Homework. -Make an effort to remember the skill, the steps and then try it out when needed in real life (in class during a lesson, argument with a peer, when angry or frustrated).

Consequences Stink! But, why are they important and how can I avoid getting one?
Consequences teach us to think about our behavior and learn to make better choices. Avoid negative behavior choices, follow the rules and think about the consequences before you act. Be prepared to accept the consequences of your behavior. Make an effort to choose a positive behavior

What is meant by positive thinking and negative thinking and how does it apply to using self-control?
One of the most important parts of self-control is being able to control what you think, so you can control how you feel, so you can control how to act. If you think positive thoughts like "that doesn't matter to me, or it will be okay" you will feel and act positively. If you think negative thoughts like "I'm so mad, or I'm going to punch that person" you will feel and act negatively.

What are the steps to communicating anger with words?
Skill Steps: 1. Count to 10 2. Ask yourself why you are angry 3. Think about what you should do 4. Use your words appropriately 5. Ask the other person if you can speak to them. Tell the person why you are angry, stating what he/she has done and how it affects you. (Be sure to get an adult to help you if needed)

Apologizing - You are mad about something and end up yelling at your peer for something else, now your peer is mad. How should you apologize to them?
You should apologize when you are at fault for something. Ex: You borrowed something and broke it, you accidentally bumped into someone, you took your anger out on someone or hurt someone's feelings. "I'm sorry I...(what you did)" "Because it made you (the feeling you caused the other person to have)" "Next time I will (Your better choice)" "Do you accept my apology?"

Why is it important to be able to recognize another person's anger and what are the steps?
It is important to be able to see when another person is angry so you do not let yourself become a "target" and do not get yourself involved OR so that you can offer help. Skill Steps: 1. Listen and stay calm 2. Think of the consequences of different behaviors 3. Ask the person why they are angry 4. Ask how you can help or if you are getting angry, leave the situation

Conflict Resolution- Think of a conflict you have or had with a peer and how you resolved the situation.
Steps: 1. Stop and Say- "I want to resolve this conflict" and get an adult or staff to help you. 2. Allow the adult or staff to lead the resolution. Each person tells their side of the story without interruption. 3. Express feelings 4. Discuss ideas so each person is happy 5. Agree on one 6. Shake hands!
