Who is "A-WA"?

A-WA is fronted by sisters Tair, Liron and Tagel Haim, who take the Arabic-language songs of their heritage and recast them for the 21st-century dance floor. Their father's family is Yemeni Jews, whose distinct culture and nearly extinct Arabic dialect bridges the Arab world and Israel; that video for "Habib Galbi" was shot near their home village, in Israel's far south, nearly wedged in between Egypt and Jordan. Even the band's name is a callback to shared cultural identity: aywa means "yeah" in Arabic. (NPR)

Mimouna is a Jewish holiday originating from the Maghreb (North Africa) celebrating the end of Passover, featuring leavened goods – foods explicitly made with chametz to mark the end of a period where Jews could not eat such goods.

Who is David "Dudu" Tassa?

David "Dudu" Tassa is an Israeli,  singer, songwriter, and record producer of Mizrahi Jewish descent. Besides having had a successful solo career in Israel, Tassa has been the leader of the internationally acclaimed band Dudu Tassa and the Kuwaitis which plays new renditions of old Iraqi and Kuwaiti songs written and composed by Tassa's late grandfather and great-uncle, Daoud and Salih Al-Kuwaity.

What is Syria?

Hadeel Oueis is a Syrian American writer and journalist focusing on the Middle East. In 2011 Hadeel was arrested by the Assad regime for participating in the advocacy for political rights in Syria. In 2012, she spoke in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva about the suffering of the Syrians. The United States delegation in Geneva met with Oueis and helped her relocate to the United States.

What is Tunisia?


The ancient El Ghriba Synagogue (Arabic: كنيس الغريبة), also known as the Djerba Synagogue, is located on the Tunisian island of Djerba. It is situated in the Jewish village of Hara Seghira (currently known as er-Riadh), several kilometres southwest of Houmt El Souk, the main town of Djerba.


The synagogue is the oldest in Tunisia, and besides being the center of the island's Jewish life is also a site of pilgrimage, one of the legends associated with its founding claims that either a stone or a door from Solomon's Temple or the Second Temple is incorporated in the building.

What is Morocco?

Sfenj is a fritter-like Moroccan doughnut made from a sticky, unsweetened leavened dough. Once it has risen, handfuls of dough are shaped into rings and deep-fried until golden and crispy with a chewy, fluffy interior. You can dust with sugar, if you like, or simply eat as is. What is "ethnic cleansing"?

The term “Ethnic Cleansing” is commonly used when discussing issues of social justice. Dr. Saba Soomekh emphasized that the Jewish experience is one of Ethnic cleansing, particularly the experience of Mizrahim. She gives the example of there once being thousands of Jews across the middle east, but now there are just a handful outside of Israel. This, she says, constitutes ethnic cleansing and should be held to the same standard as other ethnic groups who have been forced from their homes.

The mass migration of Yemeni Jews to Israel. Operation Magic Carpet is a widely known nickname for Operation On Wings of Eagles (Hebrew: כנפי נשרים, Kanfei Nesharim), an operation between June 1949 and September 1950 that brought 49,000 Yemenite Jews to the new state of Israel. During its course, the overwhelming majority of Yemenite Jews – some 47,000 from Yemen, 1,500 from Aden, as well as 500 from Djibouti and Eritrea and some 2,000 Jews from Saudi Arabia– were airlifted to Israel. What is the Henna Ceremony?

The Mizrahi Jews of Morocco, Algeria, Yemen, Persia, Iraq as well as other countries, absorbed and adapted the use of henna as did their Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and Zoroastrian neighbors. The Jewish henna became an important tradition that marked and enhanced auspicious events: births, birthdays, bar mitzvahs, holidays, and most lastingly as a rite of passage ceremony for Jewish Sephardic weddings.

A Yom Hillula is commemorated specifically through simcha (joy), and festive celebration. The observation of a hillula in North African Jewish communities is also widespread, especially in Morocco, with the Hiloula of Rabbi Isaac Ben Walid and the Hiloula of Rabbi Amram ben Diwan <--(the Yom Hillula of Rabbi Amram ben Diwan) among them, as well as the Baba Sali in the Israeli town of Netivot.
