Shepody Bay and Mary’s Point were designated as a hemispheric shorebird reserve in 1987. At this time the Shepody Bay area, including Johnson’s Mills, and the Minas Basin were also designated as a Ramsar site, however, Mary’s Point was designated as a wetland of significant importance in 1982. The Minas Basin designated under WHSRN in 1988.

Chignecto Bay is joined with the Minas Basin to the Lower reaches of the Upper Bay of Fundy. Collectively, Shepody and Chignecto Bays, and Cumberland and Minas Basins are known as the Upper Bay of Fundy.

WHSRN stands for Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network. WHSRN is an international organization founded in the mid 1980s to assure the preservation of critical habitat that is extremely important to migratory shorebirds in the western hemisphere. To be designated as a Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve the area must be populated by at least 30% of the world’s population or at least 500 000 shorebirds annually.
