They do not want to be fearful servants to Caesar.

He would rather be a villager because he feels that a democracy is much better for Rome than a monarchy. Also it was with his ancestor's help that Rome became a democracy and Brutus feels that being a son of Rome would ultimately feel the same as being a villager because he would have no power either way.
