A motivating operation (MO) is an environmental event or condition that alters how effective a reinforcer is going to be. MO's are broken into 2 categories. What are they and what do they mean?

Establishing Operations (EOs): Increase the value of a reinforcer, making a specific behavior more likely to occur. For example, a person who hasn't eaten in hours is hungry, so food becomes highly motivating.

Abolishing Operations (AOs): Decrease the value of a reinforcer, making a related behavior less likely. For example, after eating a large meal, the same food is no longer motivating.
