What do we call the blanket of air surrounding the Earth?
The atmosphere!
What is the Greenhouse effect?
Gases in Earth's atmosphere trap heat from the Sun, keeping Earth nice and warm.
What is the periodic table?
A table that shows all the elements (different kinds of atoms) we have discovered.
What is an atom?
The smallest piece of matter (anything that takes up space and has mass).
What is the name of the company that offers this class? (Hint: it's not the name of your school!)
Quest in Science!
True or False: Most of the atmosphere is made of oxygen.
False!
BONUS for 2X POINTS:
Name the most common gas in the atmosphere.
What are the three states of matter? Which one has the most energy? (Hint: which comes last when you boil water?)
Solid, liquid, and gas. Gases have the most energy.
Why does the periodic table have many different colors?
Elements are color-coded according to their groups, or families. For example, on this table, the alkali metals are red.
Name the three kind of particles that make up an atom.
Protons, neutrons, and electrons.
BONUS FOR 2X POINTS:
Which of these particles are positive, negative, or neutral?
What is the name of Ms. Spangler's cat?
Marble!
What would happen if you tried to use a parachute in a vacuum?
You would fall just as fast as you would without the parachute. This is because a parachute uses air resistance to slow you down. Without air, it's useless!
Which part of the Earth is warmer: the equator or the poles? Why?
The equator! More light hits the equator straight on than the poles.
If I ask you to tell me an element's chemical symbol, what am I asking for?
The 1-2 letter combination that stands for an element on the periodic table (like O for oxygen or Al for aluminum).
Draw and label a diagram of an atom.
See below!
When did Ms. Spangler graduate college?
Just last year in 2024!
Why is an atmospheric mat difficult to pick up when you are lifting by the hook?
There is a low pressure zone under the mat. When you pull up by the hook, the weight of the air above the mat pushes down on the mat, "sticking" it to the table.
The metal ball in the picture below easily goes through the metal hoop. What will happen if your teacher heats up the metal ball? Why?
The ball will not go through the loop because the heat caused the atoms in the ball to spread out.
BONUS for 2X POINTS:
Why do the atoms spread out?
Describe how to read this element's card.
This is Sodium. Its chemical symbol is Na. It has 11 protons, and it weighs 22.99 atomic units.
Describe what a molecule is and give an example of one.
A molecule is a combination of two or more different atoms. For example, water (H2O) is made of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
How many siblings does Ms. Spangler have?
Two! One older sibling and one younger sibling.
Today, Ms. Spangler looked at her barometer and noticed the pressure was low. Should she bring an umbrella or leave it at home? (Hint: think about our cloud in a bottle demo).
Bring an umbrella! Low pressure means the weather will be wet and overcast.
Ms. Spangler is building a new school. She wants the school to stay cool during the day so her students will be comfortable. She has the choice to make the roof black or white. Which color should she choose? Why?
White! Black materials absorb light, which makes them heat up quickly. White materials reflect light, making them heat up less quickly.
How many elements are there on the periodic table? 2X POINTS if you can tell me the answer without looking ;)
118 in total
Write the chemical formula for this compound.
H2SO4
BONUS for 2X POINTS:
Create a molecule diagram for CHCl3.
What color is the binder Ms. Spangler keeps all her worksheets in? (If you've ever come in early, you've definitely seen it...)
Blue/green! Or whatever color you want to call it.
