Read the following passage and determine it's main point: Sir Francis Drake was a famous English explorer. He sailed the seas to find new trade routes. He lived in the late 1500’s. Drake was the second explorer ever to circumnavigate (sail all the way around) the globe. The first person to do that was Ferdinand Magellan, about 50 years earlier. In Drake’s time, England and Spain were enemies and had been fighting each other in a war. The Queen of England asked Drake to help in the war efforts against the Spanish. Drake busied himself looting and plundering Spanish ships at sea. He stole from them whenever he encountered them. In this way, he was also a pirate. Drake spent much of his life at sea.

Read the following passage and determine it's main point: Causes of Poverty Poverty is a complex social issue. There are many theories that try to explain its causes. One theory is that poverty is a result of the circumstances in which poor people find themselves. For example, most poor individuals do not have adequate education. They may also lack the opportunities to obtain jobs that can produce livable incomes. Other seemingly indirect factors, like poor health or discrimination can also play a major role in a person staying poor. There is no simple cause of poverty, but looking closely at how poor people live may help us to find some answers.

Read the passage and determine the main point: Many students feel that being assigned too much homework by teachers is problematic. To spend one or two hours a weekday working on school assignments after having attended school for six or more hours seems to be excessive. Students feel that schoolwork should be done in school, and only in school. Time away from school should be reserved for recreation, family, and friends, but too often students spend this time working on hours of homework. Students believe that teachers assigning work to be done at home is an unfair and inconsiderate practice. While many students feel that they are assigned too much homework, when it comes down to being good students, they have no choice but to complete the assignments. To resolve the issue of being assigned too much homework, students believe that a portion of each class period should be set aside specifically for completing assignments, rather than sending such assignments home for completion.
