  • Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or gauze.
  • Apply an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.
  • Cover with a bandage to protect it from further dirt and irritation.
  • Monitor the wound for any signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus).
  • Comfort the child and allow them to return to play when ready.

During recess, a 6-year-old child is running and accidentally bumps into another child. A few moments later, you notice their nose is bleeding. How do you properly handle this situation?

  • Stay calm and reassure the child.
  • Have the child sit down and lean slightly forward to prevent blood from running down their throat.
  • Pinch the soft part of the nose (just below the bony bridge) with a tissue or clean cloth for about 10 minutes without stopping.
  • Encourage the child to breathe through their mouth and avoid sniffing, blowing their nose, or lying back.
  • After 10 minutes, check if the bleeding has stopped. If not, repeat for another 10 minutes.
  • Once the bleeding stops, advise the child to rest and avoid strenuous activity for the next few hours.
  • If the nosebleed continues after 20 minutes or is due to a severe injury, seek medical attention.

What are the Kangaroo Clubhouse steps for Medical emergency Injury involving a child?

  • For any medical emergency or injury involving a child, staff will take the following steps:


    •  The caregiver will use their CPR and First Aid training to take care of the child.

    •  If the injury is not life threatening the child will be administered to and then the injury will be documented in his/her file and a written document will be made immediately for the parent.

    • If the emergency is life threatening, the director will contact emergency personnel and then contact the parents or legal guardian.

    •  If the parents or legal guardians cannot be reached, the director will then attempt to contact the child’s emergency contacts.


      •  If the injury is not life threatening but needs immediate attention and no person can be reached for emergency contacts a caregiver will provide transportation to the closest medical facility and will keep trying to contact the parent, guardian or another emergency contact. (Health history and emergency contact information will be taken)

  • Ensure the child is seated and avoid putting weight on the injured ankle.
  • Assess for severe injury. If the ankle looks deformed or the child is in extreme pain, do not move it—seek medical help immediately.
  • Apply the R.I.C.E. method:
    • Rest: Keep the child from using the injured ankle.
    • Ice: Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling.
    • Compression: Wrap the ankle with a bandage to minimize swelling (not too tight).
    • Elevation: Keep the foot raised above heart level when possible.
  • Monitor the child for pain and swelling. If the pain persists or they cannot bear any weight after a few hours, recommend medical evaluation.
  • Advise limited activity and ensure the child avoids high-impact play for a few days.

If a child runs away from the classroom, what immediate actions should be taken?

Conduct a head count, initiate lockdown procedures, and notify administration while starting a search protocol.

A 5-year-old child with a known peanut allergy accidentally eats a snack containing peanuts. Within minutes, they begin coughing, wheezing, and struggling to breathe. What do you do?

  • Act immediately. Time is critical in anaphylaxis.
  • Ask the child if they are feeling other symptoms (swelling, dizziness, rash, or nausea).
  • Administer the child’s epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) if available.
    • Remove the safety cap.
    • Place the injector firmly against the child’s outer thigh.
    • Press and hold for 3-10 seconds as per instructions.
    • Remove and massage the area for a few seconds.
  • Call 911 immediately. Even if the child seems to improve, they need emergency medical attention.
  • Keep the child calm and monitor their breathing. If symptoms worsen before emergency help arrives, a second dose of epinephrine may be needed after 5-15 minutes (if prescribed).
  • Do not give food or drink in case their throat swells further.
  • When EMS arrives, inform them of the allergy, symptoms, and time of epinephrine administration.

A 6-year-old child suddenly collapses on the playground and is unresponsive. They are not breathing. You are the first person on the scene. What immediate first-aid actions should you take?

  1. Check for responsiveness.
    • Tap the child’s shoulder and shout, “Are you okay?”
    • If there is no response, shout for help and direct someone to call 911.
  2. Check for breathing.
    • Look for chest movement, listen for breath sounds, and feel for air on your cheek for no more than 10 seconds.
    • If the child is not breathing or only gasping, begin CPR immediately.
  3. Start CPR:
    • Place the child on a firm, flat surface.
    • Give 30 chest compressions:
      • Use one or two hands, depending on the child’s size.
      • Press the chest about 2 inches deep at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute (think of the beat of "Stayin’ Alive" by the Bee Gees).
    • Give 2 rescue breaths:
      • Tilt the child’s head back slightly to open the airway.
      • Pinch the nose and give a breath, watching for the chest to rise.
      • Repeat a second breath.
  4. Continue CPR until:
    • The child starts breathing.
    • An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is available (use immediately if accessible).
    • Medical professionals arrive and take over.
    • You are physically unable to continue.
  5. If an AED is available:
    • Turn it on and follow voice prompts.
    • Apply pediatric pads if available, or use adult pads with child modifications.
    • Continue CPR as instructed by the AED until help arrives.
