Named after the Austrian mountaineer Fritz Benesch who created the system in 1894, the Benesch scale measured difficulty in seven levels from VII (being the easiest) to I (being the most difficult). Every expanding climbing achievements forced an additional 0 and 00 onto this until it was eventually replaced by the Welzenbach Scale (after German mountaineer Willo Welzenback) in 1923. This system replaced 00 with the grade V and asserting increased difficulty with ascending roman numbers. This was renamed as the UIAA scale we know today in 1968.
