The energy of motion.

100

What is potential energy?

Energy stored based on an object's position or state.

Potential energy decreases.

200
What is chemical energy?

Energy stored in the bonds between atoms.

200

200

What is an example of PE?

Answers vary.

200

What are the two primary factors that affect potential energy?

Mass and height.

200

As potential energy increases, what happens to kinetic energy?

Kinetic energy decreases.

A student investigated the relationship between kinetic energy and velocity by calculating the kinetic energies of three moving objects with different masses.  They then created the graph in Figure 1.

Which object has the least mass? Be sure to explain your reasoning.

Object B has the least mass, because mass is directly proportional to the kinetic energy of an object and object B has the least kinetic energy.

300

At what position did the ball have the most potential energy?

Position 1.

400

What is nuclear energy?

Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom.

400

At a certain point if the potential energy of a falling object is 20J and mechanical energy is 70J, what is kinetic energy?

50J of kinetic energy.

400

At a certain point if the kinetic energy of a falling object is 40J and mechanical energy is 100J, what is potential energy?

60J of potential energy.

Based on the above table, would a car with a mass of 0.18kg have more or less kinetic energy than Car E if it was also traveling at a velocity of 5mph?

It would have more kinetic energy, because kinetic energy and mass are directly proportional to each other.

400

Which of the above heights would result in a ball having the highest velocity if dropped from? Explain your reasoning.

6m, because more potential energy is converted into kinetic energy if dropped from a greater height.

Thermal, sound, electrical, light/electromagnetic, chemical, nuclear, elastic, and gravitational.

500

Name 4 forms of kinetic energy.

Thermal, sound, electrical, and light/electromagnetic

Chemical, nuclear, elastic, and gravitational.

Based on the data table, describe the relationship between gravitational potential energy, mass, and height.

The GPE is directly proportional to the height and directly proportional to the mass of the steel ball.

Describe what is happening to kinetic, potential, and mechanical energy in the above experiment.

The pendulum has 7J of potential energy at position W, then the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy as it travels to position X. After position X, the pendulum swings back up which converts the kinetic energy back to potential energy. The total/mechanical energy is always 7J, so it does not change.
