What type of agriculture is gonna help save the soil?

Regenerative Agriculture: a type of farming practice that helps reverse climate change. It helps by rebuilding the soil so that it’s healthy. They help keep it healthy by not using any pesticides, and they do not till the ground.

What are some actions done by humans that affect climate and make climate change worse?

Fossil Fuels’ carbon sources, deforestation are a big part of climate change. These are bad for us because the carbon goes into the atmosphere, which makes our planet hotter. This is what global warming is caused by. Deforestation takes away animal’s homes, and also increases gases in the atmosphere.

100

What are some things that show that there has been an evident chemical change?

Specific events occur that show that there has been a change. It may not be visible but a chemical reaction will occur. Visible reactions may be changing in colour or bubbles. Examples are the burning of wood, fireworks, and baking soda and vinegar.

A cell is an open system, what type of nutrients does it obtain?

Cells need carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to function properly. An open system is when energy and matter have to cross the boundaries of a system.

200

Why will soil help save the earth?

The soil will help us with decreasing the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere.

200

What is the greenhouse effect?

The greenhouse effect is caused by various gases going into the atmosphere. Radiant energy is absorbed by the atmosphere as thermal energy. This is what helps keep the earth at a liveable temperature.  The main gases that cause the greenhouse effect are carbon dioxide, water vapour, methane and nitrous oxide.

Which chemicals are bad for societal and personal use?

Nicotine and alcohol are very bad for us. These two substances are regulated by the government though. Nicotine comes in cigarettes and vape juice, it's a very dependable drug. It contains propylene glycol, flavouring and other chemicals when it is in a vape juice form. In cigarettes, it contains tar, preservatives, and other chemicals. Anything other than oxygen you should not be inhaling because it is bad for your lungs and can decrease your productivity.

What are 4 ways of seeing that there is a presence of energy?

  • Change in motion

  • Change in position

  • Change in shape

  • Change in temperature

300

What are some ways you can help the climate crisis?

  • Eat a more plant-based diet (vegetables, fruits, bread, rice, beyond meat)

  • Compost (fruit and vegetables that have gone bad or just the waste, grass that has been cut, waste from animals)

  • Contribute to your garden more (move plants around every year, frequent soil testing, put compost in your garden)

300

What types of education can we get from the internet that explain climate change?

International programs and films (like Kiss the ground) can help us learn more about what’s happening around our world. Programs like Montreal Protocol, INFCCC / IPCC, Kyoto Protocol, and lots more. These programs help us tackle global warming and climate change.

300

How did others back then use chemistry to survive?

First nations would use heating and freezing. Heating would help clean the food and make sure it was sterilized. Freezing would help the food not decay from organisms, and help it not go bad. Salting would help dry water out of the meat. It also takes bacteria out of water. They used a lot of other techniques like fermentation and smoking.

300

What is research at the molecular level?

This research helps us understand how cells work and what they look like. They look specifically at genes, proteins and more.

400

What is an animal that may be helpful in revitalizing soil?

Cows can actually be very useful in keeping soil healthy. When cows roam free, they eat the grass (which can trim it so it doesn’t get out of control, so there is a bonus). Once they have to defecate, it will just sit on the soil, which enriches it.

400

What are some instruments that can help us study climate and climate change?

Instruments that help us determine climate are satellites, high-altitude jets, and deep-sea submarines. For example, satellites use data to monitor greenhouse gases and the pattern the weather does.

400

What are 3 chemistry-based jobs?

  • Forensic Scientist: these scientists work at crime scenes trying to find fingerprints, blood or any sort of DNA. They use this as evidence to either help a person or prove them guilty.

  • Chemical Engineer: chemical engineers help test products but also make them as well. They make products from raw materials.

  • Water Chemist: these chemists help make sure the quality of the water you are drinking is safe to use and consume. They check for any types of contaminants.

400

What forms does energy exist in?

  • Kinetic energy: this is the energy of movement. Kinetic energy is thermal, electrical and magnetic energy.

  • Potential energy: this is energy that is being stored, but ready for use. Gravitational, chemical and elastic and examples of potential energy.

500

How does soil erosion affect the economy?

Soil erosion affects the way that plants grow. So when plants cannot be grown to their full extent, that can affect farmers’ income. This also means that they have to spend more money on water, and more seeds to increase the number of crops they are growing.

500

Is there any way we can reverse climate change?

We can start reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But taking care of our soil may also help the way we can take care of our earth. Soil is a big carbon sink, a carbon sink is something that reduces carbon dioxide. But there is no way that we can permanently reverse it.

500

What are 2 chemical reactions that are significant to us?

  • Rust: when anything starts to rust, it will change its colour to a copper brown

  • Baking: when you add a liquid or add heat when you are baking, this is a chemical reaction.
